Technical Certificate Level 1: Major and Minor Chords, Scales and Power Chords
Course Objectives:
- To expand the student’s knowledge of major and minor chords on the guitar.
- To introduce basic strumming and chord transitions between open chord shapes
- To teach fundamental scales and power chords used in music.
Learning Outcomes:
- Chord Structures and Formulas:
- A Major Chord : Students will learn to play the A Major chord, which consists of the root (A), the major third (C#), and the perfect fifth (E).
- D Major Chord : Students will understand the structure of the D Major chord, featuring the root (D), the major third (F#), and the perfect fifth (A).
- E Major Chord : Mastery of the E Major chord, comprising the root (E), the major third (G#), and the perfect fifth (B).
- Am Chord : Proficiency in playing the Am chord, with the root (A), the minor third (C), and the perfect fifth (E).
- Em Chord : Ability to play the Em chord, involving the root (E), the minor third (G), and the perfect fifth (B).
- Dm Chord : Familiarity with the Dm chord, including the root (D), the minor third (F), and the perfect fifth (A).
- Scales:
- A Natural Minor Scale: Students will learn the A Natural Minor scale, important for developing melodic and improvisational skills.
- C Major Scale: Introduction to the C Major scale, essential for understanding major key music theory.
- Power Chords:
- Mastery of power chords with the E string as the root. These chords are simplified and focus on the root and the perfect fifth, ideal for rock and pop music styles.

- Students will practice strumming and changing between the chords learned, using a metronome to maintain steady timing and improve rhythmic accuracy.
