Warm welcomes to our vibrant guitar aficionados at Simply Guitar! As we continue to unravel the tapestry of chords that paint our musical journeys, today’s spotlight shines on a chord that’s brimming with soul and a bluesy disposition: the C7 in open position. Often serving as a bridge to resolutions in many a tune, this chord adds a dash of intrigue to your playing. Let’s explore the magic of the C7 chord together!

What is the C7 Chord?

The C7, also known as C dominant seventh, is the older, jazzier sibling of the basic C major chord. A darling in blues, rock, funk, and jazz, its notes – C, E, G, and B♭ – lend a mix of harmony and slight tension, beckoning an impending resolution.

Intervals of the C7 Chord:

  • Root (R): C
  • Major 3rd (3): E
  • Perfect 5th (5): G
  • Minor 7th (b7): B♭

Exploring these intervals paves the way for a deeper appreciation of the chord’s signature sound.

How to Play the C7 Chord in Open Position:

  1. Begin with your ring finger on the 3rd fret of the A (5th) string, hitting the C note.
  2. Your middle finger should be placed on the 2nd fret of the D (4th) string, ringing the E note.
  3. Your little finger finds its niche on the 3rd fret of the G (3rd) string, capturing the Bb note.
  4. Your first finger should play the high octave of C on the 1st fret of the B (2nd) string.
  5. Strum from the A (5th) string downwards, immersing yourself in the soulful essence of the C7 chord.

Mastery Tips for the C7:

  • Ensure fingers are snug against the frets, achieving a bright and clear tone.
  • Proper finger positioning will prevent adjacent strings from being unintentionally muted.
  • Like all chords, remember that consistent practice is the key to fluidity.
