The G Major Scale on Guitar

The Formula of the Scale

The G Major scale consists of seven notes: G (Root), A (2nd), B (major 3rd), C (4th), D (5th), E (6th), and F# (major 7th). When playing this scale on the E, A, D, and G strings between the open and third frets, we use these notes in the following positions:

  • G (Root): 3rd fret on the E string
  • A (2nd): Open A string
  • B (major 3rd): 2nd fret on the A string
  • C (4th): 3rd fret on the A string
  • D (5th): Open D string
  • E (6th): 2nd fret on the D string
  • F# (major 7th): 4th fret on the D string
  • G (Root): Open G string

By following this pattern, you can play the G Major scale within the specified fret range.

How to Play the Scale

To play the G Major scale on the E, A, D, and G strings between the open and third frets, follow these steps:

  1. Starting on the E String:
    • Place your middle finger on the 3rd fret of the E string. This note is G (Root).
  2. Moving to the A String:
    • Play the open A string. This note is A (2nd).
    • Place your index finger on the 2nd fret of the A string. This note is B (major 3rd).
    • Place your middle finger on the 3rd fret of the A string. This note is C (4th).
  3. Moving to the D String:
    • Play the open D string. This note is D (5th).
    • Place your index finger on the 2nd fret of the D string. This note is E (6th).
    • Place your ring finger on the 4th fret of the D string. This note is F# (major 7th).
  4. Moving to the G String:
    • Play the open G string. This note is G (Root), completing one octave.

Repeat the pattern up and down the scale to practice smooth transitions and accuracy. Ensure each note rings out clearly before moving to the next.
